Occupational Therapists Making the Impossible, Possible

April is Occupational Therapy month, and the Francis Howell School District is taking this opportunity to say thank you to all of the occupational therapists (OT) employed by the District. Not only do they support students, but parents, teachers, and administrators in making the impossible, possible.

“The school-based OT will work on remediating skill deficits that interfere with performance or work toward adaptive solutions that allow a child to fully participate in their daily occupations right away,” said Therapeutic Services Coordinator Cathy Fortney. “As a child moves into secondary school, the OT will work collaboratively with the school team to ensure that each student has the skills required to be successful in school occupations, and help prepare for post-graduation occupations, such as independent living, community engagement, social interaction, or even employment.”

OT is a unique approach that assists individuals to fully engage in any activity that is a part of daily life. In the school setting, a student’s occupation can include engaging in classroom instruction, self-regulation of emotions, effectively interacting with others, completing work, self-help tasks, effectively managing school tools, navigating the building, and more.

“School-based OT allows you to work with so many diverse populations,” said Occupational Therapist Stacey Schuette. “I love being able to help children, of all ages, work towards independence of their life skills and watch them feel successful, challenged, and/or accomplished.”

Please join FHSD in recognizing the amazing assets we have in our OTs, who make the impossible, possible!
