What is Read 180?

  • Board approved curriculum
  • Scholastic program that focuses on comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary
  • 90 minute block split between whole group, small group, independent reading, and personalized computer instruction
  • Each rotation is approximately 20 minutes, with a 20 minute whole group activity at the start of class, five minute wrap-up

Comprehension Skills Taught

  • 1st Quarter- Main Idea/Details (non-fiction)
  • 2nd Quarter- Sequence of Events (non-fiction)
  • 3rd Quarter- Literary Elements (fiction)
  • 4th Quarter- Summarize (non-fiction)

Quarterly Reading Goals

  • Each student should read and pass THREE accompanying reading quizzes per quarter
  • Start with the Read 180 Library books, then choose others
  • This is a District goal
  • FHMS has highest number of quiz success of all five middle schools….let’s keep it this way J
  • Worms, candy, party for success!

     

  • Assessments

    Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI)

  • Taken in August, October, December, March, and May
  • Test of comprehension and is not timed
  • Score is a Lexile level or a measure of text readability

    End of the Year Grade Level Lexile Proficiency Ranges

  • Grade 6:  925-1070
  • Grade 7:  970-1120
  • Grade 8:  1010-1185

    R-Skills

  • Test over comprehension, vocabulary, and writing mechanics skills taught in each small group workshop

     

    Tools for the Home

    Homework - Please read 15 to 20 minutes an evening!

  • Help your child feel successful and BE successful in Reading

Grades

  • Do not check Infinite Campus until the end of first quarter
  • Feedback on independent reading logs and computer progress given to students weekly
  • Grades reflective of individual mastery of skills (computer, independent reading, small group)
