What is System 44?

  • Board approved curriculum
  • Scholastic program that focuses on phonics, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary
  • 90 minute block split between whole group, small group, independent reading, and personalized computer instruction
  • Each rotation is approx. 25 minutes with a 10 minute whole group activity at the start of class and a 5 minute wrap-up

Quarterly Reading Goals:

  • Each student should read and pass THREE accompanying reading quizzes per quarter.  
  • District goal
  • FHMS has highest number of quizzes past of all 5 middle schools….let’s keep it this way J
  • Worms, candy, party

Assessments:

Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI):

  • Taken in August, October, December, March, and May
  • Test of comprehension (not timed)
  • Score is a lexile level- a measure of text readability

Scholastic Phonics Inventory (SPI):

  • Taken in August, December, and May
  • Assessment of accuracy and fluency on sight words, letter identification, real, and nonsense words

End of the Year Grade Level Lexile Proficiency Ranges:

  • Grade 6: 925-1070
  • Grade 7: 970-1120

Text to 81010

  • 6th/7th hr: @6th7thhr
Grades:
  • Feedback on independent reading logs and computer progress given to students weekly
  • Grades reflective of individual mastery of skills (computer, independent reading, small group).

 Homework:

  • Every 2 weeks students will have homework (book recommendations)
  • Read 15 to 20 minutes an evening
