FHSD to Host Heroin and Prescription Drug Town Hall
In an effort to educate our community about the growing use of heroin and abuse of prescription drugs among youth in our area, the Francis Howell School District is hosting a town hall forum on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium at Francis Howell Central High School, 5199 Highway N, Cottleville, MO 63304. The event is organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (NCADA) and local law enforcement agencies.
This forum is the latest in a series of similar town hall meetings throughout the region. The increased use of heroin in the greater St. Louis area has grown to alarming proportions, and resulted in more than two hundred overdose deaths in the St. Louis area in the past year. This forum is intended to provide useful information for the community in order to proactively confront the dangerous epidemic of heroin and prescription painkiller use by St. Louis area teens.
The meeting is open to the public, and parents and students are encouraged to attend. Speakers will include representatives from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (NCADA) – St. Louis Area, the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department, and Bridgeway Behavioral Health. Topics will include Education, Impact, Law Enforcement, Treatment and Recovery. A presentation and panel discussion will be followed by a time for questions and answers. Speakers will be on hand to address issues of education, community, law enforcement, treatment and recovery.

FHSD to Begin Making Automated Attendance Calls The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is happy to announce that beginning Wednesday, February 29th parents will begin receiving automated telephone calls regarding unverified or unexcused student absences. Earlier this school year, the Francis Howell School District implemented the SchoolMessenger notification system to make automated calls to parents and guardians regarding weather-related school closings and school emergencies. We are now expanding the use of the notification system to make attendance calls for students that are absent from school.
If your child is absent from school, you will receive an automated phone call, text message and/or email (depending on your contact preferences) through the SchoolMessenger system. The system allows our schools to log attendance and notify parents of any unverified or unexcused absence in the timeliest manner possible. Please note, parents should still call the school attendance office to report your child/children's absence from school anytime they will be absent or late to school.
Click here for more information about SchoolMessenger.

Show-Me a Movie
Francis Howell Middle School Eighth Grade Spectra recently submitted an original three minute movie to the Show-Me a Movie digital contest, sponsored by Cooperating School District of Missouri. In this contest, students were asked to write, act, shoot, direct and edit their film. Schools in the state of Missouri were allowed to compete.
Within the contest, the students’ film needed to fit into one of the six different categories designed by the Cooperating School district. Based on curriculum with a content focus, students in Spectra have entered this contest for the last seven years.
The winning film from FHMS was in the Show me a Challenge category and titled Pushing Through. Eighth graders who were involved were : Zoe Epperson, main editor; Derek Reed and Michael Bartner, photography; Grant Morey and Kris Nilsson, acting and writing. Seventh Grade Spectra students entered the contest as well. Students worked with hands on technology in the recording, voice-overs and editing processes were used by both classes, with problem solving that occurred as the process of downloading images and editing happened. Maneesh Karnati (7) was the green screen king, as he figured out how to use a green screen with the newer Mac, and kudos to Derek and Michael for their 8th grade filming. Zoe Epperson and Nick Eckstrom (7) became one with the computer from such involved work.
Great teamwork! Good job all!
