Red Ribbon Week - Oct. 23 - 31

It’s Red Ribbon Week in FHSD! Students across the District are participating in lessons centered on drug prevention and awareness. Below is a list of activities that FHSD schools have planned for this year:

Becky-David Elementary is participating in STEAM-themed dress-up days that will touch on different topics related to safe and healthy choices. The counselors have planned lessons on safety with medicine, how to handle peer pressure, and more. On Oct. 28, a police sergeant will stop by the fourth and fifth grade assembly and bring police dogs for the students to see.

Castlio Elementary is participating in a door decorating contest and themed dress up days throughout the week. Each day, the students will watch a video featuring Mr. Scholle, a medic, and other individuals discussing topics such as the dangers of drugs, peer pressure, and more. Students will also participate in Red Ribbon activities during art, music, P.E., lunch, and recess. Sodexo will have a day where they will serve red foods. Giveaways will be handed out to students each day to coordinate with the theme.

Fairmount Elementary students will be participating in a door decorating contest and the national photo contest for Red Ribbon Week. In addition, the counselors have prepared various lessons for the students that will include information on good citizenship, personal care responsibility, medication safety in the home, and the effects of drugs on the brain. Parents will also receive information and handouts from the lessons. At the end of the week, parents and students will sign the drug-free pledge.

Independence Elementary will start their Red Ribbon Week with a school-wide Drug-Free Pledge during morning announcements. Counselors will teach lessons throughout the week and students will participate in a dress-up week with themes related to being healthy and drug-free.

Warren Elementary is celebrating “Wellness Week” as part of Red Ribbon Week this year. Events will include exercises, self-care, videos, and books related to wellness of the heart, mind, and body. Students will also dress up for a variety of themes throughout the week.

Weldon Elementary students will receive anti-drug related wristbands for the students to wear and will win prizes for participating.

Barnwell Middles NJHS is planning a week full of themed dress-up days, an all-school assembly, and a showing of the sixth episode of their Red Man Video, which teaches kids how to be drug-free. On Oct. 29, Barnwell is hosting a Hocus Pocus Drugs Aren’t Our Focus Family Fun Festival, from 5:00 – 7:30 PM, with an all you can eat pancake dinner.

Bryan Middle is planning themed dress-up days. On Tuesday, students will wear neon for “Be bright and don’t do drugs” day.  On Thursday, they will wear clothes representing past decades for “Drugs weren’t cool then, and they’re not cool now” day.

FHMS's Character Council members are promoting a drug-free lifestyle for all students by providing daily lessons. Some topics that the students will discuss throughout the week include “what are your dreams that you will not give up for drugs,” drug facts, and information on the dangers of vaping and heroin. The students will also participate in role-playing activities demonstrating how to say no to drugs. In addition to the lessons, students will dress up for various themes throughout the week and compete in a door decorating contest. On Nov. 4, the students will attend an assembly with guest speakers from “The Awaken Project.” The assembly will give students a multi-sensory, dynamic, and storytelling experience about the dangers of drugs.

Hollenbeck Middle students will attend an assembly on Friday, Nov. 1, that will feature Officer Frank Magel from the DEA Task Force as the guest speaker. The band and choir will perform music, and the drama team will present a couple of skits on how to say no to drugs. The assembly will also include minute to win it competition games between the students, Officer Magel, and the staff. In addition to the assembly, students will participate in themed dress-up days and a door decorating contest.

Saeger Middle’s STUCO is planning themed dress-up days related to being drug-free. On Wednesday, Oct. 30, Saeger is organizing a Fight the War on Drugs Benefit to raise money for charity.
