6th grade Communication Arts

Reading is FUNdamental!
Everyone must know how to read fluently and effectively whether it is reading a book for school or leisure, reading a manual on how to repair something, reading a recipe, reading a newspaper, or reading an email from a friend.  The 6th grade reading program focuses on reading strategies to enable students to be good readers.

By May, 2012, all students will read a minimum of nine books.
4 must be current award books
    1 biography
    1 non-fiction
    2 in-class novel studies
    1 choice-fiction

The list of award books can be found on the internet under Mark Twain Award Books 2011-2012 or Truman Award Books 2011-2012.

In addition to READING, all students will write many pieces using the 6+1 Traits of Writing:  ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, conventions, and publishing.
