National Physical Theraphy Month

School-based physical therapy involves dynamic collaboration with students, staff, and parents to ensure that every student is able to successfully navigate the school environment and effectively learn, socialize, and play. At FHSD, this includes assessing all areas where a student might interact during the school day – bus, classroom, hallways, playgrounds, gymnasiums, and lunch rooms – to ensure that the student can be as independent as possible in their functional mobility.

Physical therapists may work on strengthening underlying skills (strengthening core muscles or improving balance) or providing strategies and adaptations (walker, wheelchair, or adaptive seating) to improve function. They can also provide recommendations to students on healthy lifestyle choices to ensure that they maintain physical fitness and prevent further injuries.

“What I love most about being a school-based PT is the collaborative team approach we have towards our students,” said Carrie Choate, a District Physical Therapist. “I get to do what I love every day in an environment that is both challenging and fun. I see such gains and progress in so many of my students.”

FHSD employs six physical therapists across the District. Join us in recognizing all of our physical therapists this month and thanking them for their work!
